Algebra

Algebra is the branch of mathematics concerning the study of the rules of operation. Elementary algebra is often part of the secondary education curriculum and introduces the concept of using variables to represent numbers. Statements based on variables are then manipulated using the rules of operations that apply to numbers, such as subtraction, in order to solve equations.

Variables are useful because they allow the use of numbers that are not known. They also allow the exploration of mathematical relationships between quantities. For example, if you sell x tickets, then your profit will be 5x – 20 dollars.
