Statistics is a branch of mathematics focused on collecting and interpreting data. It is concerned with collection, analysis, interpretation or explanation, and presentation of data. Statistics provides tools for prediction and forecasting using data and statistical models.
Statistics is used to interpret data about an entire population by studying a sample of the population. In order for this sample to be useful, it must be a good representation of the overall population.
Statistics is used in a wide variety of academic disciplines, including natural and social sciences, government, and business.
