Overview

Lattice multiplication is a method that is used to multiply large numbers. It uses the multiplication of smaller numbers to figure out the product of two larger numbers. Because of this, basic knowledge of times tables is required. Lattice multiplication is compromised of boxes with diagonal lines through them. Draw the diagonal line in each box from the top right corner to the bottom left corner. The top left is for your tens place (the first digit in a two digit number) and the bottom right is for your ones place (the second digit in a two digit number). The number of boxes you have depends on the number you are multiplying – for example, if you are multiplying two one-digit numbers, there is one box. If you are multiplying two 2-digit numbers, there are four boxes. The first number is across the top, and the second down the side. Where each single digit number instersects, multiply them together using the box technique. Then, using the same pattern you drew the diagonals with, mutliply the diagonals. If you have two 2-digit numbers, there will be four diagonals. Multiply together the diagonals to come up with four numbers, and the pattern you use to put them together is going from the top down and then to the right.

Overview

A table, also referred to as a chart, is a way to record certain information so you can match it up quickly. They are very useful and are used in business all the time. It is possible to join certain tables. Provided that the tables share at least one common element, it is possible to combine them to form a new chart. Typically when you join tables you will either increase your columns and decrease your rows, or increase your rows and decrease your columns, depending on what way your graph is oriented and what elements are the same. Sometimes rows or columns may remain the same, but if both remain the same, then that means there is no join – it means you have the same exact chart.

Overview

The fundamental counting principle is a simple method of finding out how many times something occurs. It is a simplified form of finding permutations and combinations, and is used very often in statistics when permutations and combinations must be found. The fundamental counting principle states that if an event can occur in M ways, and another event can occur in N ways, then the first event followed by the second event can occur M * N ways. Basically, if you have two different options, and a different amount of each option, you can multiply them together to find the total number of ways you can combine these options.

Overview

Set theory is a branch of mathematics that deals with sets of numbers and the way that they interact with each other. One part of set theory is union and intersection. Union is represented by the symbol U, and means to combine the numbers in a set. The union of A and B states that for all x in A and B, the union contains all x in A and all x in B. Intersection is represented by an upside-down letter U, and means to only use numbers that are found in both sets. The intersection of A and B states that for all x in A and B, the intersection contains all x found in both A and B. The definitions might seem similar, but they are different.

Union:

A = {1, 2, 3, 4}, B = {2, 3, 6, 7}. The union would be {1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7}.

Intersection:

A = {1, 2, 3, 4}, B = {2, 3, 6, 7}. The intersection would be {2, 3}

Combining Like Terms

How to Simplify Equations by Combining Like Terms

Overview

Combining like terms is very simple. It is only done with addition and subtraction. The reason they call it combining like terms is because you only combine terms that are alike. For instance, you could not combine 2x and 2y, even though the number 2 is the same. The important part is the variables, and the variables cannot be combined. You can combine the terms 3x and 5x, because they have the same variable. Another example is with exponential value. You cannot combine the terms 2x and 3x^2 because the exponential values are not the same, which makes the variable not the same. When it is possible to combine like terms, simply add or subtract the numbers, and put that number in front of the variable. Then you have combined like terms. This can be done as many times as you like in a problem provided the variables are the same.
