Overview
The additive inverse is the inverse of the additive identity – which should be very easy to guess. However, the problem is not guessing the definition of the additive inverse – the problem is knowing what the inverse of the additive identity is. The additive identity states that any number plus zero equals itself. The additive inverse states that any positive number minus its true value or any negative number plus its true value is equal to zero – in other words, that two inverses together equal zero. You solve equations by using the additive inverse.

Overview
The additive identity is very similar to the zero properties of multiplication and addition. However, the additive property is only used with addition – which should be easy to tell from the name of this identity. The additive identity states that any number plus zero, or with zero added to it, is equal to itself. The additive property is one of the properties that all teachers expect you to already know, so it is important to learn it.

Overview
A factor tree is a type of tree diagram that splits numbers into their factors. It is a very useful method of simplification. First, start with a number and draw two lines from it. Two numbers that when multiplied equal your first number need to go there. A great number to start with is 2, if your number is an even number. you can start with any two numbers you like, provided they fit the guidelines, excluding anything paired with the number one – because then you won’t get anywhere. Then for each of your two numbers, if they are not simplified, you do the same process with them. Keep it up until you are down to simplified, or prime, numbers. You will know you have reached one when the only multiples are one and itself.

Overview
There are two definitions of the identity property. The first deals with multiplication. It states that anything multiplied by one is itself. The second property deals with addition. It states that any number with zero added to it equals itself. As you can see, they are very similar to each other. Sometimes the zero property of multiplication is confused with the identity property for multiplication, although it is something different.
